How it Works

Our device stores data on lead, pH, coliform, and total dissolved solid content. We then transmit this data over LoRa, a method of sending and receiving small pieces of data by transmitting chirps over very long distances using radio waves. We were able to replicate a low cost sensor by shining UV light through a sample and measuring the UV absorption by the target molecules via a silicon photo multiplier(SiPM) for in situ coliform monitoring. Our lead sensor is a composed of carbon paste electrodes that offer high accuracy at a fraction of what readily available lead sensors cost.

Impact

The lack of crucial real-time data has water organizations rushing to solve problems instead of addressing them before they occur. Our NuFlo device and system solve this by giving NGOs, universities, and governments access to real-time water data from remote wells in water-stressed communities, without the need for on-grid power, cell or internet signals, and complex technical training. It typically costs $9,000 to implement one rurally accessible water well. By implementing NuFlo, NGOs and Government Agencies are able to save money and resources by reducing physical visits to test well quality as they introduce our low cost monitoring system for a comparably affordable price. This will enable organizations to focus on other critical aspects of their work.
